What is CPgM1?
The Mastercam Certified Programmer Level 1 (CPgM1) is a rigorous set of practical tests that demonstrate a programmer’s ability to work effectively with CAM software, overcome common issues facing today’s shops, and produce high quality finished parts. Programmers completing the CPgM1 program carry with them a useful means of quickly proving their skill in an increasingly demanding industry.
The CPgM1 program was developed by a board made up of some of the most respected names in industrial CNC training. After developing definitions, standards, and tests that would apply across most industries, the board separated the certification into several components, each focusing on different aspect of manufacturing.
CPgM1 certification is the first of these components. Geared to 2D machining, it ensures a strong foundation in CNC knowledge. A complete CPgM1 prep kit is also available, delivering valuable tips and practical exercises for those wanting to take the test.
We will be announcing the next certification components in the coming months. These include 3D Machining, Rotary and Multi-axis, Turning, and 3D Design. We will also be releasing a Certification course for high schools.

Examples of CPgM1 Requirements
Applicant will be required to:
1. Create a 3D wireframe within 2 hours.
- Applicant is to receive no instructions from anyone but the Test Administrator while performing this exercise.
- Create the part to a complete 3D wireframe by any means possible using Mastercam software.
- Importing any geometry is not allowed
2. Create a CNC program and support information for each setup within 2.5 hours
- Each setup should be referenced from Upper Left Hand Corner.
- Mastercam Backplot report time not to exceed 15 minutes.
- Each setup must have a distinct “Toolpath Group” and group name in the operations manager and must have unique NC filename name.
- Each setup should machine the previous STL file from Verify (one file per plane).
- Setup sheet and tool list for each setup.
- The applicant must engrave both their last name and the test site on a face of the part.
- Surface finish 63 rms.
- Depth of all holes are dimensioned to full diameter.
- STL compare all programs to solid within tolerance -+.005.
- Zip2Gofile that includes all options
3. Certified Instructor will run part program based on above criteria to following specification.
- No feedrate changes at the machine tool.
- If a cutting tool is broken due to a programming or excessive feed rates error, the test is ended.
- Datum must not be removed from a previous machining setup
